Should Pantheists smoke pot |

Should the smoking/consumption of hashish/marijuana material be alright for pantheists?
And if so should it be legalized? |

Depending on a few things, I would say.
1) Would that Pantheist wish to inhale smoke, as a cigarette's would be (and this is not an invitation to debate the comparison of the two)? 2) Will harm come to others as a result (second-hand smoke, driving under the influence, etc.)? 3) Would that Pantheist suffer guilt for doing so? (We've been taught for a long time that drugs are "bad.") Should it be legal? The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms might say "no." Some advocates of civil liberties might say "yes." My personal position is to allow it, but limit it; for example, no driving under the influence. spongebarb451

I found a similar post in the newcomers faq and posted a reaction there. this is a paste from what I wrote there.
............... Weed is very harmfull for the lungs. I read that the British Lung Foundation did a study which showed that smoking only 3 joints are as harmful as 20 cigarettes. Weed is also mentally addictive and can couse serious mental isseus like psychotic problems and depression etc. weed also depresses the blood flow to the brain. I have seen people begging for some money from there friends to buy some cannabis. which made me even more convinced that it is very much addictive even if mostly mentally addictive.mental addictivity should not be under estimated. dont fall for the common weed smokers "its all ok,just natural blabla" Nature is full of things that are not so healthy for us humans. even if there are medical reasons in some cases for the use of canabis i think they should always look for other alternatives (some people might use it as an excuse to smoke weed, get addicted etc..).and if there is no other option it should be strongly regulated by authorities/healthcare and preferably not smoked but vaporized or by some other means of intake besides smoking. I live in a country where they tolerate the use of cannabis I see with my own eyes what it does to our youth.when you tolerate such things, new generations start thinking its ok and normal to do such drugs.Moral and behavior values get crippled and so on and so on... take care of your body, be honest to your temple of life. |

good points listed.
I guess does it bring harm to others does it bring harm to yourself does it bring harm to the environment Does the good outweight the bad. How does it compare with other legal intoxicants like beer, wine and spirits. Is your toke any worse than my couple of beers I'll have tonight. Has pot caused anymore harm to society that alcohol? My gut feeling is that a toke or two is probably no worse than my drink or two. And that pot misuse is probably no worse than alchol abuse, but i'll keep reading with interest. Cheers |

I would ask: why take care of your body in the first place; what is the point/purpose of doing that?

If something is illiegal it is illegal for a reason.
In this case because it is dangerous/ health threatening The effect of the drug is not changed by beleif, so no pantheists should not smoke pot and it should not be made legal. Any one who does take drugs is an idiot putting there own life at risk, and I want nothing to do with such people. Pantheists should be able to set a good moral example to other people especially those younger than ourselves, and i dont think a bunch of druggies is a very good example now is it? |

"If something is illiegal it is illegal for a reason."
Pot is illegal because an ignorant, authoritarian Congress pandered to an even more ignorant public. Pot is not good for you, I don't smoke it, and I don't recomend that you smoke it unless you have a medical need for it, but its no worse than alcohol. People have a right to do whatever they wish with their own lives and their own bodies. It is immoral to pass laws that prevent adults from making choices about their own lives. |

riverhyena wrote: riverhyena, does this mean that you want nothing to do with people who use caffein, aspirin and antibiotics? These are also drugs. Step down off of your high horse and touch mother earth. She has provided these "drugs" for our use and used in moderation and for the right purpose they are wonderful. As Pantheists we should be able to set a good moral example to other people, especially those younger than ourselves, and teach them that Mother Nature provides. Condemning those who use the fruits of her labor for personal enrichment is not a very good example, now is it? |

The whole crux of the issue is "personal responsibility"
If you can do so without harming others, be my guest. If not, it is your personal responsibility to realize your limitations so as not to harm anyone else. |
